卡罗尔（布莱思·丹纳 Blythe Danner 饰）曾是一位小有名气的歌手，在舞台上享受着万众瞩目的光彩。如今，年近七十的她早已无人问津，丈夫去世后就一直过着形单影只离群索居的生活。卡罗尔一直活在丈夫去世的阴影中，恐惧着失去和死亡，和女儿凯瑟琳（玛琳·阿克曼 Malin Akerman 饰）之间的关系亦十分紧张。
