牙医朱利安（沃尔特·马修 Walter Matthau 饰）生性风流，为了不被情人们纠缠，他对外宣称自己是个已婚男子。作为朱利安的情人之一，托尼（歌蒂·韩 Goldie Hawn 饰）的内心充满了痛苦，在被朱利安放了一次鸽子后，她想到了自杀，所幸被邻居伊戈尔（Rick Lenz 饰）救下。得知托尼因为自己寻了短见，朱利安十分感动，决定娶她为妻。可自以为成为了破坏别人家庭的第三者的托尼竟然提出要在结婚之前见一见朱利安那从未露过面的妻子。

无奈之下，朱利安只得求助于护士小姐斯蒂芬妮（英格丽·褒曼 Ingrid Bergman 饰），拜托她扮演自己的妻子。没想到，在见到了美丽迷人的斯蒂芬妮后，托尼居然无论如何也不愿相信朱利安会抛弃这样优秀的女人，为了圆谎，朱利安只得制造了另一个谎言——斯蒂芬妮有了其他的相好。在重重的谎言中，这一男二女之间会发生怎样有趣的事情呢？
