“瘦长鬼影”由Something Awful论坛用户Eric Knudson(又名Victor Surge，他也联合编写剧本) 在2009年创作，是一个身材高大瘦削、穿着黑西装、没有面部表情的男人，通常他会跟踪、绑架、伤害他人，尤其是孩童。随着时间推进，这一形象对流行文化产生了影响。2014年，一位12岁的女孩尝试刺杀一位同学，据称是受“瘦长鬼影”的影响。这一案件及背后的文化基因也被收录进了2016年的纪录片《小心瘦长鬼影》里。
