因失忆而被关入精神病院的医生人见广介（吉田辉雄 饰），始终为一首盘旋于脑中的摇篮曲所困扰。为了查清自己真实身份，广介从医院逃脱，偶遇一名哼唱这首曲子的女孩初代（由美てる子 饰），然而女孩就在自己面前被人杀害。

背负杀人罪名逃亡的广介在报上看见一个名叫菰田源三郎（吉田辉雄 饰）的人死亡的消息，而此人竟与自己容貌相似。广介假冒源三郎借尸还魂，毫无阻碍地回到菰田家。同时得知，源三郎的父亲丈五郎（土方巽 饰）因佝偻病离群索居，在海中央的小岛生活。不久源三郎之妻遇害，为探真相，广介与仆人登上小岛，却看到人世间最恐怖的景象……
