影片改编自佩内洛普·菲茨杰拉德同名小说《书店》，背景设定于1959年，拥有自由灵魂的弗萝伦丝·格林在失去丈夫后，将悲痛放在一边，赌上一切开了一家书店，这是昏昏沉沉的英格兰海边小镇哈堡的唯一一家书店。通过这家书店，狭隘的当地人接触到了当代最优秀的文学作品，拓宽了视野，百年来一成不变的小镇掀起了一阵文化觉醒的风潮。弗萝伦丝因此结识了同道中人布朗迪希先生，他也早已厌倦了小镇陈腐的氛围。但她的举动也招致了仇敌，其他生意不好的店主对她产生了敌意，还有斤斤计较、满腹牢骚的加玛特夫人。当弗萝伦丝拒绝屈服于加玛特夫人的意志时，她们开始了一场角逐，不仅为了书店，更为了小镇的心脏和灵魂。
