70年代初，伦敦。神秘的美国作家约翰·弗尼John Verney（理查德·威德马克饰）来到他所喜欢的亨利·贝多斯Henry Beddows（德诺姆·艾略特饰）的艺术画廊告知其资助事项。此刻，亨利正试图摆脱一个撒旦邪教对他自己及他女儿凯瑟琳Catherine（娜塔莎·金斯基饰）的影响，他请求亨利的帮助，去秘密接机——凯瑟琳作为一名修女，一直在德国巴伐利亚一个名为“耶和华的孩子们”的与世隔绝的湖心修道院修行，每年只有一次，即在她的生日期间才被允许回到英国与她的父亲团聚。

约翰感到这将可能成为他下一部小说的素材，于是应允帮助亨利。
