此次的故事根据畅销书籍改编，故事以Robert Durst的妻子Kathie（Katharine McPhee）为主人公。这个天真、年轻的女孩爱上了长相迷人但是性格古怪的房地产业富家子弟Robert Durst（Daniel Gillies），但随着时间的推移，Kathie发现他们的婚姻变得越来越黑暗、奇怪甚至吓人。Kathie在1982年神秘失踪，但是警方并未严肃对待该案，令她的家人和朋友深感失望。后来，Robert Durst因涉嫌谋杀密友Susan Berman被捕入狱。虽然没有直接的证据证明他杀害了妻子，但多数人都倾向于同意这种猜测。法院经审理查明，他还涉嫌杀害并肢解了邻居Morris Black（此案已定罪）。原著虽然描述了Robert Durst和Kathie婚姻生活中不为人知的秘密和细节，但对Kathie的真实遭遇也只是一种猜测，真相至今依然成谜。
