斯坦尼斯公开宣布再自己的画廊举办现代艺术展，展出的都是些形状、颜色和质地让人吃惊的作品，也成为了媒体关注的焦点。艺术家吉尔伯特的雕塑作品也在其中展览，他妻子乔西被作风严厉的斯坦尼斯给迷住了，因为他把自己的闲余时间都花在了那个艺术品味独特的公寓里搞摄影。但除了那些放大的书法字帖外，斯坦尼斯还收集了一大堆关于一个心理失常的人物的照片。那么乔西为什么要冒着与丈夫闹矛盾的风险去病态地探究斯坦尼斯的神秘面目呢？

《女囚犯》（La Prisonnière，1968）是克鲁佐最后一部作品，也是他初次拍摄且唯一的一部彩色电影。在一贯悬疑的氛围下探讨艺术家特异的情*品位，不论题材还是运镜在当时都相当的大胆前卫。完成此片后，1977 年1 月12 日克鲁佐在巴黎逝世。
