妇科医生杰拉尔德·波依尔帮助一对望子二十年的夫妇实现了梦想--弗朗利夫人怀孕了。为了表示感谢，弗朗利邀请波依尔夫妇到家中做客。波依尔夫人贝弗利发现弗朗利先生正在看一则关于“快乐香皂”的广告片，但是很不满意，贝弗利讲了她和孩子关于“快乐香皂”的故事后，老弗朗利决定让贝弗利·波依尔来拍广告片--原来老弗朗利居然是代理“快乐香皂”广告的老板。

以为只是拍一个广告的家庭主妇贝弗利出乎意料地收到了做“快乐香皂”形象代言人的合约，因为她在电视中亲切真诚的表现受到了人们的欢迎。原本不赞成妻子出去工作的杰拉尔德在妻子的坚持下勉强同意了，但是由于贝弗利的工作占据了大量的时间，夫妻二人聚少离多，杰拉尔德的情绪颇受影响。在求助了同医院的心理医生之后，杰拉尔德开始了一系列的补救行动：他假装和秘书亲近并留下二人的合影让妻子看见，又假装喝醉让妻子心疼。当二人刚要重归于好时，杰拉尔德又开车驶进了摄制组为他们挖的游泳池里，二人的感情再次冷却。在为贝弗利举行的晚宴上，弗朗利夫人感到自己就要生产了，贝弗利打电话给杰拉尔德，但弗朗利夫人的汽车因交通拥堵耽误在路途中，杰拉尔德赶到现场，和妻子在汽车里成功接生了一个7磅的女婴。看到弗朗利夫人的得到孩子的幸福表情，重归于好的波依尔夫妇也决定给家中添丁。
