本片改编自著名剧作家田纳西·威廉斯的同名戏剧。

徐娘半老风味犹存的“南部美女”白兰芝（费雯丽）因“不适当”的行为被解除家庭教师职务后，来到新奥尔良投靠妹妹。妹妹家在一栋肮脏的公寓内，其丈夫斯坦利（马龙·白兰度）是波兰移民的儿子，性格粗鲁莽撞，且酗酒嗜赌。因为从小娇生惯养，受过旧式的南方教育，白兰芝多少有些神经质，她认为斯坦利是个很没教养的人，而斯坦利也正因为她所表现出的娇弱敏感，认为她会带坏自己的妻子，甚至威胁到他作为家中主人的地位，对她时常加以言语侮辱以示憎恶。在这样的环境中，白兰芝的悲剧一点点展开。
