19-20世纪初，瑞士共有约15万儿童成为这样的出租孩子，仅1930年就有6万名孩子在农民家打苦工。这也是社会结构带来的后果，那时候瑞士以农业为主，而农民缺少劳动力，年幼的穷人家孩子便成为农民的免费劳动力。如今在瑞士尚有1万名过去的出租孩子活在人间。

百余年来，瑞士从未面对过这个历史上的“污点”，现在这部电影引起了社会的关注，瑞士政府也做出了相应的反应，联邦司法部长西蒙奈特·索马鲁嘎(Simonetta Sommaruga)看了这部电影并表示，很高兴这个问题现在引起了社会的重视。

她说，联邦将于2012年为当年的出租孩子举行一个纪念活动，这一活动的目的在于精神补偿，而不是经济补偿。

这些出租孩子曾为瑞士的农业经济作出了巨大的贡献，然而他们却没有得到过一分钱。瑞士政府也从未给过他们任何补偿，甚至不敢计算这笔费用，因为数字将会非常惊人。

《周日一瞥》报与一家大银行的经济专家共同算过一笔帐，瑞士农业经济从这些孩子身上享受的无偿劳动换算成金钱，价值高达200-650亿瑞郎。
