在法国中部的一个乡村，雷米·吉尔曼医生居然成了一只“乌鸦”的受害者。原来，有人写了一封署名“乌鸦”的匿名信，诬告他犯有通奸罪和非法施行流产手术。很快，这封诬告信就在村子里广泛流传开来，闹得整个村子惶恐不安，每一个村民都被怀疑是这封神秘匿名信的作者。雷米医生在对此事展开调查的过程中，逐渐发现了同胞们的卑鄙无耻和小肚鸡肠。

本片拍得相当精彩，不但剧情曲折、气氛紧凑，既反映了战时“人人自危”的心理状态，对于片中角色的个性刻画也入木三分。好莱坞于1951年由名导演奥图·普里明杰重拍成美国版，名为《第十三封信》（The Thirteenth Letter），将故事背景改为加拿大的小城，但整体成绩较法国版逊色。

导演亨利·乔治·克鲁佐（Henri-Georges Clouzot）1943年的《密告》（Le Corbeau）是他最成功的作品，也树立了其紧张悬疑的风格。
