在京都岛原游廓，经营着一家水准极其之高的艺伎场所井筒屋。女将初子曾是风光无限的太夫，但是在丈夫去世后，她洗尽红妆，以一己之力支撑着井筒屋的经营，并供养女儿雪子的学业。雪子而今正在东京的音乐学校主修钢琴，她和男友准备订婚，但是因为家庭出身的缘由而遭到对方家庭的拒绝。伤心欲绝的雪子将一切归咎与母亲，之后愤而自杀。初子忙不迭地赶往东京将女儿接了回来，并请求青年医生的场为雪子看病。在这一过程中，雪子的心意渐渐转了过来，和母亲以及其他艺伎的关系也得到缓和，而她似乎也对的场有了好感。

生活在谎言欺骗中的女性，似乎只有受尽创伤后才能看清一切……
