由Harold Pinter根据英国女作家Penelope Mortimer的同名小说改编，电影本身是对婚姻的思考。遇到Jake Armitage的时候，Jo已经是五个孩子的母亲，结过两次婚。两人结合之后，Jo开始陷入深深的抑郁状态。她再度怀孕，而这一次Jake极力反对，为了挽救自己的婚姻，Jo选择了流产，却依然不知道自己的婚姻将去向何方……

Anne Bancroft在本片中奉献的精湛演出被认为是她毕生最佳，她亦凭本片荣获第十八届戛纳电影节最佳女演员、英国电影学院奖最佳女演员以及金球奖影后的殊荣，却在当年奥斯卡奖上意外输给Mary Poppins中的Julie Andrews.
