监狱给了玛丽·米歇尔八天的圣诞假期，玛丽决定去派恩西看望叔叔，火车上遇到了军士扎克，旅途中彼此之间有了好感，火车将停靠派恩西，扎克谎称去看姐姐，和玛丽一道在牌恩西下了车。玛丽来到亨利叔叔家，莎娜阿姨非常高兴，只有亨利叔叔的女儿芭芭拉对她心存芥蒂，因为她不了解玛丽为何在监狱服刑，但她得知事情的真相后，她为自己对玛丽所做的一切感到内疚。扎克到莎娜家作客，和他们在一起非常的快乐，似乎不再去想战争带给自己的伤痛，但他有时行为的怪异让玛丽有些吃惊，他向玛丽坦诚了一切，玛丽鼓励他战胜“战士精神病”。圣诞钟声敲响，新年到了，他们憧憬着美好的未来，短短几天的相处，玛丽和扎克已深爱着对方，分离让彼此都很痛苦，扎克要回医院接受治疗，玛丽也该回监狱了，可怎么样告诉扎克呢，玛丽很为难，不知他是否理解？是否还能爱她？玛丽决定另找机会告诉扎克。扎克前来与大家告别，芭芭拉无意中说出了玛丽服刑之事让扎克一时难以接受，他认为玛丽不该向他隐瞒，一反常态的踏上火车离去，扎克突如其来的改变玛丽伤心不已，芭芭拉知道自己闯祸了也非常歉疚。玛丽伤心的踏上回监狱的路，在监狱门口却见到在此等候多时的扎克，又惊又喜，他们将一起面对一切困难。
