过去南非仍采取黑白种族隔离政策时，西方曾拍摄不少攻击此政策的影片，本片是其中佳作之一，改编自真人真事。

剧情透过白人新闻记者戴娜的十三岁女儿莫莉的眼光，观察当时南非社会不人道的特殊状况，以丰富而动人的感情场面来烘托出严肃的主题。

莫莉之父因从事反对运动躲避官方追捕而逃到国外，母亲则被南非政府施行“九十天拘禁法”，成为第一位因反对黑白隔离而遭拘禁的白人女子。她与家人长期分离，又遭逼供而不肯招认同志，一度企图服药自尽。莫莉与两个妹妹在外婆照顾下亦遭严密监控，形同家庭破碎。悲愤的莫莉经由母亲的解释与本身的遭遇，逐渐了解双亲为什么要从事反对运动。
