这是一部改编自比利时第一位接受安乐死的病人马里奥?韦斯特拉特真实经历的电影，跳跃的时间线串联起他的一生，三十九年的一生看上去似乎那么简单。电影从马里奥的青春时代开始，他和好友托马斯同时爱着美丽的姑娘琳恩。很快马里奥在酒吧遇到了另一位女孩，他们恋爱了，他们结婚了，他们生了孩子，他们离婚了，电影以几个蒙太奇的方式快速将故事推入正题。好友托马斯不经意间查处了马里奥的多发性硬化症，一开始这位年轻的政客对比还不以为然。他对生活和未来依旧充满信心，他用勇气和幽默化解一切。虽然他很快知道了这种疾病的威力，但他依旧觉得要过好生命多赐予他的每一天，直到疾病让他失去了自我的能力，他才觉得自己的人生完了，理想完了，未来也完了。与其没有尊严，不快乐的活着，还不如凭自己的意志决定自己的人生，他选择了安乐死。
