决心开始新生活的透纳一家，离开了繁华的大都市来到维吉尼亚山间居住。然而家中每个成员或多或少都有自身的问题需要解决。尤其是正值青春叛逆期的儿子麦特（汤姆·盖里 Tom Guiry饰），面对新环境他感到深深的孤独和迷失。幸运的是，一只无家可归的牧羊犬走进了他们的生活。这位家庭里的新成员不仅坚定忠诚，保护着麦特和透纳一家的安全，而且聪明到甚至通晓人性。透纳一家因为这只非凡的灵犬莱西，而渐渐凝聚在了一起。

1994年版的电影《新灵犬莱西》，再一次将灵犬莱西的传奇故事搬上荧幕。自1943年首次将它的冒险经历拍摄成电影之后，灵犬莱西的经历成为日后拍摄的最长盛不衰的故事之一。在人际关系疏离、暴力充斥的90年代，本片着实是一部适合全家观赏的温馨感人之剧。
