1968年，电影导演让·吕克-戈达尔已经获得了太多的成功。这一年，电影界前辈、法国电影资料馆馆长亨利·郎格洛瓦提出了整个电影史应该以"戈达尔前"与"戈达尔后"两个概念来划分的论点。在他看来，38岁的哥达尔结束了一个时代也开创了一个时代。著名作家路易·阿拉贡早在1965年就已经说过："今天的艺术就是戈达尔。"著名存在主义哲学家萨特也宣称："在戈达尔的影片里，学问太多了。"

其实，除了处女作《筋疲力尽》获得1960年西柏林电影节最佳导演奖、《狂人比挨洛》获得1965年威尼斯国际电影节青年评论奖、《中国姑娘》获得1967年威尼斯电影节评委会特别奖外，戈达尔导演的其他几十部影片，并没有给他带来很好的声誉，大多数观众看戈达尔的电影，不是不知所措，就是焦躁不安。或许，戈达尔生来就是电影的敌人。
