桃乐丝（西蒙·西涅莱 Simone Signoret 饰）的丈夫是个脾气十分古怪的男人，不仅如此，他还常年因为身体不好而卧病在床，饮食起居都要桃乐丝来照料。除此之外，桃乐丝的婆婆（Sylvie 饰）亦是个难缠的老太太，性格软弱的桃乐丝处处受他们的控制和指挥，终日生活在劳累和抑郁之中。

一次偶然中，桃乐丝结识了丈夫的朋友劳伦特（雷夫·瓦朗 Raf Vallone 饰），这个温柔而又憨厚的男人慰藉了桃乐丝饱受伤害的内心。随着时间的推移，两人渐渐对彼此产生了真挚的感情。不忍看到桃乐丝继续受苦，劳伦特提出了两人私奔的请求。然而这个计划很快就被桃乐丝的丈夫发现了，桃乐丝遭到了无情的软禁。
