故事梗概：

乔伊是一名自由作家，他的丈夫乔治在肯尼亚北部边境地区担任高级狩猎监督官，出于对动物的热爱，乔伊经常和丈夫一起在野生动物资源丰富的非洲大草原驻扎。期间他们结识了一位朋友——雌狮艾尔莎，当时艾尔莎还是个刚刚失去亲人的虚弱的小家伙，乔伊和丈夫收养了小艾尔莎，并悉心地抚养着它。直到有一天艾尔莎将一只小象赶回了家，而此后驻扎地附近的村庄开始不断有人反映,他们的庄稼遭到了大面积的破坏。乔伊和丈夫才意识到，艾尔莎已经长大了，也许它应该回到属于它的大草原去了。

乔治的上司狩猎督察麦卡迪建议他们把艾尔莎送到动物园。但乔伊认为那样的话，艾尔莎将会永远地失去自由，她要把艾尔莎放回大自然。这个想法在麦卡迪看来有些荒唐，因为很显然，从小就被家养的艾尔莎早已丧失了狮子的野性，要它在弱肉强食的草原上生存下去是一件很困难的事，再加上一段时间以来，偷猎者的活动日益猖獗，他...
