广州一个炎热的夏日，高耸入云的摩天大楼内，不同行业的人们各自忙碌，经营着自己的人生。曾在消防队服役的阿强（古天乐饰）开办的消防系统公司是日开张，另外一层的诊所内，消防特勤队大队长大军（刘青云饰）的妻子思乐（李心洁饰）正做着孕前检查。与此同时，大厦空调系统出现问题，防范意识较差的维修人员更引起不可遏制的火情。经验丰富的阿强迅速组织疏散，然而火势迅速蔓延到各个楼层，受灾民众的安全受到极大威胁。接到报警后，大军带领战友迅速赶赴现场。

史无前例的灾害，让大军和阿强这对失和多年的兄弟再度联系起来。危急时刻，人的生命和人性经受着最严峻的考验……
