影片分为上下两集。上集《吾赤红之章》：郁代是一个艺妓，为了个人生活的自由，她把还在上小学的女儿朋子卖到静冈的妓院叶楼当了艺妓。二人不能以母子相称，朋子时常只好眼睁睁地看着郁代陪不同的男人享乐。后来朋子认识了在士官学校上学的学生江崎武文，对于爱情的渴望从她的心中升起。下集《三桠之章》：关东大地震之后，朋子已经25岁了。她开着一家名叫“波奈家”的旅馆，心里依然爱着江崎，但始终不敢相信那会成为现实。郁代和家中原来的长工八郎草草结了婚。江崎也随之告诉朋子，由于她的母亲郁代是个艺妓，他将不再希望和她有任何联系。朋友的希望终于破灭。

影片描写了母女两代艺妓所经历的完全不同的“女人的一生”。母亲郁代曾先后三次结婚，没有男人就无法活下去。女儿朋子全心全意追求自由恋爱和真挚的爱情，却终生未嫁。观众会为朋子的遭遇而扼腕叹息，但恐怕什么话也无法说出。影片的历史背景将近半个...
