早期二战海空战题材经典。日本导演本多猪四郎代表作。影片以山本五十六将军的政治际遇、战争作为和悲剧命运为主线，演绎日本海军联合舰队的珍珠港攻击作战和中途岛作战过程以及日本海军航空队的拉包尔作战经历，重点刻画山本雄才大略、忍辱负重的军人形象：起于近卫文麿初次组建内阁的1937年，止于山本葬身布干维尔岛的1943年。影片前三分之一强主要表现太平洋战争爆发前风雨飘摇、激烈动荡的日本政局，其间空战场面多采用历史纪录片片段。日本对美作战动机策略的思考与日本海军中折内因外因的追寻，时代和战争大潮吞没一代名将。纪实风格，传记体制，理性反思，感性悼亡，丰富朴素，低调出色。大河内传次郎、二本柳宽、清水将夫、柳永二郎、高田稔、三船敏郎、三国连太郎、志村乔等主演。
